God bless the Aquabats. It's nice to know in this day and age with every band seeming to try and outdo the other in the "poor pitiful me" department that a group as wonderfully ridiculous as this can still exist, and can also have the presence of mind to document their zaniness via video camera over the years. This double disc DVD set contains over three hours of live footage from shows spanning the band's whole career [and all 7 dozen or so of their members], and is a fun retrospective for a band that definitely exists to have fun.

The main part of disc one is a live show recorded in Pomona, CA earlier this year. The 12-song set covers all four of the band's studio albums [including their b-sides and rarities comp], and is well-recorded both video and soundwise. The crowd is rabid, and the band's antics are spot-on. The disc also contains a video history of the ska-pop group from 1996 to present, including footage from their very first show. It's a cool little documentary to include, although I wish it was slightly longer. Lastly, the disc has the music video for "Super Rad" as well as the previously unreleased music video for "CD Repo Man." More for completists than anything else, but it's still a fun watch.

Disc two is where all the real fun is - a smorgasboard of of clips from a number of different shows over the years. Each clip includes one performance as well as one of the comedy/fighting bits the Aquabats are known for live. The majority of the footage is of decent quality, considering that a lot of this stuff came from handheld cameras in the audience, not from a production crew. The bits and banter in-between songs had me bursting with laughter time and time again, and remembering just how much fun I used to have listening to the Aquabats.

Also, for those of you who are obsessed with all things Travis Barker, there are a number of clips on here from his time spent with the band, and they once again prove that this guy is superhuman when it comes to drumming ability.

He also looks really, really silly in an Aquabats uniform, but that's beside the point.

Probably the funniest - and simultaneously most disturbing - part of the entire DVD set is the easter egg on disc two. I won't tell you how to view it, as I seriously think it will damage the way you think, but I will say this - the easter egg is a video of three members of the Aquabats, presumably on a cable access show, singing "Music Of The Night" from Phantom Of The Opera with a grown man suffering from Down's Syndrome. Somehow, they keep a straight face for the 6+ minutes the song runs.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to hell for laughing at this, but anyway.

Serious Awesomeness should hopefully revive interest in this band's waning popularity, as this DVD shows they still have relavance. More importantly, this band is goddamn funny live, and people need to know that. A worthy buy if you're a fan or if you're looking to discover the Aquabats for the first time - all of their bests songs are on here in one form or another, and the Bat Commander is in rare form in these concert pieces.

In short, pick it up. Pick it up pick it up pick it up.

One hilarious piece of plastic. The epic battle between the Aqua Bats and (The diabolical, scourge of the seven seas) Powdered Milkman is worth the price of admission alone.

The Ultra (or Mysterious) Kyu quit the band after the first batch of Floating Eye tours to go to college.

And Catboy quit the band because he got bored with the band (This is the only thing I have heard on it. I got it from the offical forum more than a few times)

the gwar comparison made me remember when the two of them did the ska parade radio show and the aquabats had to fight gwar. Ever since then it has been my dream for them to do a tour (or even one show, I would fly anywhere to see) on a real big stage with both gwar and the aquabats set up on stage playing songs back and forth while fighting. it would be incredible. the only thing that worries me is the mingling of the fans. I've seen Gwar quite a few times and some real sketchy characters come out of the woodwork.

I've never been to rotate but I have been to indy stores all over quebec and ontario, and I deffinately agree that prices for indy cds are terrible. Big stores like hmv can be even worse. As much as I hate to say it, best buy probably has the best prices if you can find what you're looking for

You guys are crazy. I also live in Toronto and have never had to pay more than 15-20 dollars for a cd. That goes for stuff on labels as small as Uprising, all the way up to Bridge Nine, Fearless, Jade Tree, Fat, Epitaph, etc. Just go to Rotate This (620 Queen St. West), nothing is over 20 dollars. It's the best indie store in town.

Posted by mikeinflames on 2003-11-23 17:50:05
    My Score:

There are some great indie record shops around town (in Toronto) and in most cities in Ontario as well
But you do have to pay for your music
Must cds I pick up ... unless they are on Fat or Epitaph cost anywhere between $21.99 to $32.99
I checked the Best Buy and they didn't have it in stock
I ran into the same problem when the Bouncing Souls DVD came out
It took me forever to actually find it ... and when I did it was something like $59.99
9 times out of 10 I just order from the labels website ... it's still not exactly cheap ... but it's a lot less than what most of the stores are charging

    My Score:

yes... last time i checked an american dollar was worth something like $1.47 canadian, but i am sure that has changed significantly since 2001.

i too believe that bigwig is done with fearless. they aren't under contract and neither side is showing the other any love. rumors about their new label? i have heard fat and jade tree more than any other name dropped. mostly because of strung out and fat connections and then with the pesky shevchuck fella and strike anywhere. but who knows.

Canada has got squat in regards to indie selection.

Plus, it's the only country where indie releases cost twice as much as major label stuff.

True story: MxPx's live record was once for sale at $34,99.

The funniest thing is on the 2nd disc. When The Ultra Kyu is singing that old Savage Garden song (I want to stand with you on a mountain. I want to bathe with you in the sea...) Then he starts playing crazy cool solos with the rest of The Aquabats background dancing.
