Review by: AtomicGarden See others by this writer Refused is Fucking Dead (link) Only registered users can post comments Published on July 15th 2001 Just when I was starting to lose hope in Epitaph, they pick up Refused - and release The Shape of Punk to Come (which is I believe their only release on Epitaph, aside from the New Noise Theology single). That was three years ago. Refused has long sense been dissolved, but they have left their make in the history of punk rock. It's not often I think a band should get a "10", usually it has to be really fucking good (like Ignite's A Place Called Home) or damn influential (like Bad Religion's Suffer or anything from the Dead Kennedys). This hasn't exactly been an influential album, or at least not yet. While most bands have to stay true to their roots, Refused decided to be different. Powered by their strong political beliefs and their already popular hardcore sound (similar to Earth-Crisis), they added another dimension to their music. You can't really put a finger on it... but it's a mix of techno, violins, very distinct guitar riffs, and everything else you'd expect not to hear in a punk rock record. You have to admit to yourself that punk, especially hardcore punk, is a very stagnant genre of music. I love it as much as the next guy, but musically it's not going anywhere. Refused is/was hoping to change that. This is one of the most unique albums I've ever popped into my cd player, and you owe it to good music to check out at least a few good tracks. Their single, New Noise attracted me to the album. It's a 5-or-so minute song, which was the first odd thing about it, and it had a nice bass/guitar line to start it off. About 50 or so seconds through the song, it went fucking techno! I wasn't sure if I was supposed to hate it because it was different, or love it. I kept listening. One minute and three seconds later, you hear Dennis Lyxzèn yell at the top of his lungs: "Can I SCREAM?" The song has my attention, and then I wanted to check out the rest of the album. I didn't even need to go past looking at the titles to understand this is some politically charged individuals. With songs like "The Apollo Programme was a Hoax" and "The Deadly Rhythm (Of the Production Line)"... I knew it'd be interesting. Besides their strong beliefs, the music itself is incredible, as I mentioned above. I literally got goose bumps whenever I'd listen to the CD all the way through. I must admit, that never happens when I listen to a NOFX CD. With short narrations from the lead singer, rambling about such matters like how "capitalism is like organized crime", I fell in love with this album. Calling it just "punk rock" doesn't do them justice. Just call it music. And shit, I really hope this is the shape of punk to come. You might always want to check out their website, it's got a ton of interesting information including their "final communiquè". Here's what they have to say about their own record, and despite being very condescending... I can't help but agree: Stronger than ever and with their third album "The shape of punk to come" they're showing us what the punk is supposed to be. They have spent months in the studio, Tonteknik, together with Eskil Lövstrom, and out came the best record ever. No boasting! They deliver revolutionary songs with intellectual beats that goes deep and get their influence from many different sides. They are innovaters and creators of the new noise and they refuse to stay at a stop.Dennis Lyxzèn is now currently with his new band, the International Noise Conspiracy, which is not a bad band at all. But they're not trying to be another Refused. So, this is the last full length album you'll most likely ever hear from these guys again. Please login or register to post comments. This is a masterpiece. defines what hardcore punk is/should be. The Refused is the shaoe of punk Probably the only album that me and all the punks will agree on. Classic album and possibly one of the most important hardcore/punk cds ever for myself I finally found it! Holy shit, after two and a half years of searching, I have finally found it. I have been listening to this album, and only this album, for the past week, non-stop. I was expecting this to be great, and it still amazes me just how great it is. From the opening track to the closing track (a nice, acoustic number that lets me recover from the ass-kicking the album gave me on the other 11 tracks), this is truly a classic. It's that good. So very, very fucking good. this happens to be the greatest album that has ever been made on the planet earth, the moon or uranus. if someone dislike this record, musically or talent/production wise, it's because of too much time playing the skin flute. this album is fantastic Nation of Ulysses rip off through and through i just listened to this album and then read the essay with all the titles in it and now i'm listening to it again. this is fucking brilliant and amazing. i'm blown away. holy fuck. this record is the greatest hardcore record of all time. you stupid fucking punks are too ignorant to realize it. europe is light years ahead of america in terms of music, so it's no surprise thats where these fucks hail from. all you people in shitty american punk bands need to take some lessons from the euro-geniuses. get out there and steal this fucking masterpiece. i feel like saying fuck again. fuck. The into to the title track is amazing! New Noise Summer Holidays Vs. Punkroutine, the shape of punk to come, liberation frequency are all classic but the other songs I don't care much for. Good album, but its very fucking overrated. I meant to give it three stars when I told you I had a typo. Nation of Ulysses. Nation of Ulysses. Nation of Ulysses. Nation of Ulysses. Nation of Ulysses. No, I think you missed my point. AnArKiE DOoD!x!x!x!x! PISSin Da NitE AWaY!x!x! I GIt NoKEd DowNe OIOIOIOIOIOI Chumbawumba were an anarchist band. That "I Get Knocked Down- But I Get Up Again!" song is by them. This is my favorite album ever after reading the liner notes.... What's with the Crass, Chumbawumba comment? Tell me more... The Refused were, are, and will always be great, and this album KICKED ASS!! and to those kids that be loving GC and saying this was crap, GO TO BAD MUSIC HELL YOU DiNks! refused brought out one of the most original, progressive, and intelligent albums that was almost solely responsible for me getting back into punk/hardcore after getting sick of stagnating cloned bands - im still talking about punk here, not pop! the shape of punk to come wasnt perfect, but for reinvigorating a flagging genre getting diluted by 'bands' like good charlotte the album more than deserves a 10. i dunno why anyone with half a brain even argues about the merits of good charlotte, i mean if someone listens to them, how can your abuse make their life any worse than it already obviously is??? That's why the Refused are uncool. This is probably the best (and most pleasantly different) punk/hardcore albums of all time. REFUSED made political punk cool again with this album and definately had a great deal of influence on a lot of today's punk acts (The Rise being a perfect example). This is a must-have album for anyone interested in the punk genre or music with a powerful message. Dear Scott Heisel, 10, best record. one Refused song has almost the exact same riff as a Born Against song. I hope that was some sort of tribute rather than a rip off. But ripping off someone elses music and making out as if its your own dont seem like a tribute. "Good charollette suck?" No. charollette sucks. subject verb agreement is important. That's just a rumor... "No, it's selling out their beliefs. Crass were anti-consumerism, also, and they, along with many others, never had to go with the system to change it, and they've probably turned a lot more people onto their political beliefs through reissues alone compared to this band." "Good charollette suck?" No. charollette sucks. subject verb agreement is important. Good Charlotte suck. Simple as. for crying out loud people, it was a joke. and by the looks of it, one of the best to be pulled on this site. you are all dolts. of course good charollette suck. in the words of the mighty nelson muntz: "HA HA". HOLY SHIT!! Man, whoever said Good charolotte is better than refused is the biggest piece of shit. Refused is, was, and always will be the best band ever.A million good charolotte albums wouldn't top this album, maybe unless it was a gay contest, but that's it. This album makes good charlotte look like s club punk rock was about not conforming so why are there so many crap cut out pop punk and god awfull emo bandwagon jumpers around. you lot are so ignorant. if you dont think new noise is THE best hardcore song written then on my view you are about as punk as my 9 year old justin timberlake fan of a sister. You will find about 10 million bands ripping of these in the future Good Charlotte is a bunch of wannabe punk rockers that fuck 11 year old girls and boys after their concerts because they are the only fans that they have. If you dipshits are not one of there victims than you are most likely pedofiles like them. The point is that good charlotte is SHIT. They are a bunch of fags that try to dress punk in order to make up for the lack of punk in there music, and the shit doesnt even sound good. It sounds like a bunch of little bitches whining about how there girlfriends from 7 or 8 years ago left them. They are pathetic and there sound sucks. Oh and by the way, its "douche" not "doosh" you fucking morons. This shit doesnt even sound like music it just sounds like a bunch of gay doosh bags with mohawks and tights humping each others buttholes well that is basically refused because they suck and so does anyone who likes them if u wanna listen to real music that actually sounds good listen to sum 41 and simple plan and good charlotte and yes GOOD CHARLOTTE RULES the guy below me is a doosh bag with no weiner and bites his dogs nipples till they bleed............... GOOD CHARLOTTE RULES!!! AND REFUSED SUCKS LITTLE COCKS "i dun lyke it, its' lyke 2 lawd 'n stuff. Good Charlotte rules!" i dun lyke it, its' lyke 2 lawd 'n stuff. Good Charlotte rules! Whoever said that Dennis is "no action" guy, can suck my dick. He was always doing leaflets, protests, riots. Music by refused was and will always be awesome. I've heard hundreds of bands in my life and Refused is the most powerful one. REFUSED kicks ass, and those who disagree doesn't know music to begin with, and the fact that they're against capitalism and were signed on to epitaph only made them intelligent. those who say, "fuck the system," and refuse to be a part of it, won't change the system. fuck this band they hump dead monkeys... GOOD CHARLOTTE RULES! I meant Fear- "The Record". Fuck me. Classic Hardcore: ...and anything by Snapcase some classic hardcore records in my book (old and new): one of the greatest albums ever. Tired of the rehashed carbon copy punk bands that sound like the first band they listened to? Um..YA bad band, bad record or more like crappy assed record ohhhhh capitilism more like crapitilism ohhhhhhh I think Dennis Lycyduihcviuh whatever the fuck his last name is, is the biggest propaghandist bullshitter of all time. hes all talk, and all fashion, and all ideas, but no actions or follow through. The Shape of Junk to Come... No, it's selling out their beliefs. Crass were anti-consumerism, also, and they, along with many others, never had to go with the system to change it, and they've probably turned a lot more people onto their political beliefs through reissues alone compared to this band. You have to work within the system to change it. I don't agree with their views, but the fact that they are using capitalism to fight capitalism doesn't make them hypocrites, it makes them smart. So overrated... A good hardcore album, nothing more. Nothing especially great, and since these guys have got to be the biggest hypocrites ever (anti capitalism, yet are on Epitaph... right). I like the music enough, but please don't tell me adding sound effects and samples is what makes albums groundbreaking. I think it's a ten as a good, rocking hardcore album. As something to base a musical revolution on... a two. Definitely in the top 5 punk albums ever. This is one of the greatest albums of all time. this is a good album, but not as groundbreaking as people make it out to be why does this band get so much hype? oh yeah, this is punknews.org and they believe in crap. refused is a little to emo for me I could honestly kill all people who say that refused are shit.Fuck you, and FUCK you again!!!! They have such an original sound that the moment i hear i loose my fucking mind. even though they are not a band anymore they still maintain to be one of the best bands ever formed. So to all those little punks out their who say "refused suck" you should really take that cock out of your mouth and listen to something besides limp bizkit and nickelback, they are the bag lickers FUCK THIS BAND! they suck cock, they hump dead dogs I like to whack off dogs in my spare time! Sorry this album is good, very good at best. Maybe I missed out on something but the tracks aren't that amazing. If I listen to this album I get bored sometimes. There are some cracking bits of music ("New Noise" riff, violin on later track), but it's not nearly as consistent as people make it out. Yeah I agree on the Nation of Ulysses thing...but both bands are rocking so it's cool. These guys are such posers... Their message is so hypocritical since they're on Epitaph... "Fuck capitalism... but please buy from our big money label". so what can i say about this brilliant work? This album has been "revolutionary" for more then a month. I wouldnt call the blood brothers revolutionary either...they are just awesome. Jesus christ, stop clicking the goddamn refresh botton. Yep. Wire are a great band indeed. Wish I could say the same for all of these "revolutionary for a month" bands that have been sprouting up every month for the last few years. I mean, Blood Brothers, Refused, and Mars Volta are OKAY, but shit, its like the reviewers orgasm when they hear longer songs. This score is for Wire. If you liked this, check out "Pink Flag" by Wire. My .. Third favourite cd of all time. man, this cd is like the bible. i'm slightly torn. it's very different, i love that about the album and it's definately punk my virtue of the power of the convictions. thing is, i'm not sure that the sound is altogether punk but hey, whatever. my big problem with the band is that they get tagged into a category with other "scandenavian - type", "the (insert band name here)" artists , which isn't bad but it comes with a whole "ikea image" like uniforms and wierd haircuts and ties. i see how it could be an irony in the image but it doesn't sit with me as punk. if we call it hardcore or music with obvious conviction i can handle that, and that's what punk is all about, making music with conviction that says something significant. maybe that's where my major problem lies. maybe i need to expand my idea of what punk is? ah well, whatever the hell it is, it's good, very good. I did mean to say hells yes. I love listening to my refuse. im ok with refused being the number one hit review, it's better then simple plan Have you heard of the band The Kinison yet? They play powerful post-hardcore with inspiring danceable rythms and an attitude that won't quite. If you like Refused or the Blood Brother's, this is deffinatly the band for you. Their debut EP, Mortgage is Bank, is being released on June 10th. Check them out at www.thekinison.com. Yo Scott, Adam, Aubin.... Was he trying to say 'hell yes'? Or 'hells yes' whatever the hell that means... "I've got only two words for this album: listening to it right now... fucking amazing I've got only two words for this album: Again, anonymnous dude, thank you for doing what i could not. you are a god among men. Heh, please dont take away refuseds glory scott. Sick FUCKIN' album. Thank you refused.PS: Simple Plan sucks the ballsack. shit, that woulda took for fucking ever. but yeah, thanks. simple plan sucks balls. Thank you whoever for getting fucking simple plan off of #1. if you wanna salute them in swedish it´s HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! my god man you gotta have something better to do with your life than this...it´s pretty pathetic...at the same time it´s a relief that simple plan doesn´t hold the number 1 spot anymore cuz this is a punk site(although I wonder sometimes) and they are certainly not punk... That is fucking insane somebody visited this looked at this review 20,00 times so it would bolt in to first. Somebody should do this with a band that isn't well known that would get people talking. I found a review of a hardcore band called Taken the other day that I believe was reviwed in 2000. And I couldn't believe what I'm missing out on. It is fucking unbelievable. Check out the archive and read the review then check them out. actually if you open it in iternet explorer and press f5 with one hand you can do like 10000 in an hour, while reading something in your other hand, but yeah i have too much time on my hands. Wow, whoever did this has *way* too much time on their hands. I should just invoke my admin powers and strip this of the 20,000-odd hits it's gotten today, but... I dunno. the refused were ok, but they we're way to indebted to the nation of ulysses, who did the whole genre expanding thing (jazz/noise/beat poetry) before these guys even formed he doesnt say that capitalism is like organized crime. he says that capitalism IS organized crime. Denis is the fucking man. and he is the nicest most humble guy in person too. This album has been reviewed a lot, but it deserves all the praise that it gets. Even after three years this album sounds amazing. Great record. |
