It's early, but I can say with great confidence that Teenage Bottlerocket's Warning Device is the best pop-punk album I've heard this year. Time will tell if it retains the top spot, but for now it encompasses the beginning, middle and end of the list. Wyoming's leather jacket-clad savants return with another burst of memorable pop-punk that's easy to digest and difficult to hate. This is supposed to be fun, and it is. And honestly, who hates fun?

The album's opening one-two punch of "Bottlerocket" and "In the Basement" encapsulate the difference of the band's two vocalists nicely, with Ray's snottier, slightly more abrasive approach dominating the former and Kody's relatively smoother approach carrying the latter (that killer chorus in "Basement" certainly doesn't hurt, either). And when the two dudes collaborate, such as on the super sweet "Gave You My Heart," the results are consistently stellar. For the purists, there's also plenty of token "whoa"s and "oh"s sprinkled throughout.

All the other elements that make great and effective pop-punk are here as well, and in nearly perfect balance. Besides the aforementioned quality lead and backup vocals, the simple solos in songs like "Welcome to the Nuthouse" and "Crawling Back to You" sell the hooks well. The choruses are brain-lodging at every turn. Lyrically, the band doesn't exactly forge into unfamiliar territory, choosing to instead write what they know, which at the risk of pigeonholing myself and everyone who might like this record, is the M.O. for many pop-punk bands and their fans: girls, some even identified by name ("Anna's Song," f.e., with lines like "all I know if loving you's a felony / they'd have to take me into custody"), alienation ("Welcome to the Nuthouse," "Social Life") and general boredom ("Totally Stupid"). The band does a fine job of taking what could be easily perceived to be lyrical fluff and portraying it as sincere and earnest as I'm sure it actually is. Besides, it's all easily identifiable and relatable. It's highly likely most of us have, at one time or another, felt like an outcast, or though we wear girl (or boy, if you prefer) repellent like it's cologne. God knows I have.

All of this is helped along by Bill Stevenson and Jason Livermore's assistance, and like most of what gets put to tape at the Blasting Room, this record sounds really great.

Warning Device did not surprise me in any way, shape or form, and in no way is that an insult. Teenage Bottlerocket are damn good at what they do and if it ain't broke, then why fix it? This is a solid followup to Total and yet another addition to Red Scare's already awesome catalogue.

Am I alone when I say that I think this is better than Total? They're both really good, as well as not so different from one another.. but at the same time.. I've found myself replaying WD far more than Total. I dunno what it is. There is not one song on this whole album that I'd skip to get to a better song. Whatever. Definitely in the top 10 of '08.

    oh man this record is just like your favourite take-away;

there is nothin original about it so you don't think that you can give it top marks cos you know there must be a better meal out there but my god, it's just done so well that you don't think there is anything you'd rather be eating.

bit of a strained metaphor but, you know, basically this album rocks.

What a way to kickoff 2008!! I love how this band just doesn't give a shit and continues to play fun, catchy traditional pop punk.

to the guy below me, ramones-type bands dont deserve more than 7s because its the least challenging genre, its pretty easy to write this kind of pop music and it is in no way revolutionary or new to the music scene, therefore not deserving of anything higher than a 7.

Posted by INDW on 2008-01-15 04:53:00

as red scare themselves say below there seems to be an unwritten rule about not giving ramonescore more than a 7. by definition almost it is unoriginal i am sure that many of the hardcore/orgcore bands getting 9s are just good at what they do also. the text and the rating do not match.

    My Score:

pretty much exactly what i expected...an ultra catchy pop punk album

damn this begins and ends fast though, it's like one second i'm listening to track 3 and the next i'm listening to track 1

that aside...the songs are all good so this is a 7/10

    Posted by fallingupwards84 on 2008-01-14 10:35:49

every time i see a 3-ish star review, i always think it's a mediocre record, not worth seeking out but if you come across it used or cheap, pick it up, where you'll eventually pull it out for a listen every couple of months.

well then you need to change the way you interpret these scores, because 7/10 is pretty good

    My Score:

Pretty awesome that so many people are digging their new album. Regarding the score, they also gave The Copyrights a 7/10 but also listed it as the 12th best album of the year and called it "the best pop punk album of the year' or something. So 7/10 ain't so bad after all...

    Good follow-up to Total.

    Posted by Jesus_H_Christ on 2008-01-13 11:13:12

Quite possibly the best pop-punk band currently out there.

Posted by brown on 2008-01-12 17:31:08

Come on, this record is better than any pop-punk record from last year, it deserves a higher rating

There is no way in fuck this is better then the High Tension Wires album released last year.

however I have not heard this album. I'm just saying, midnight cashier was gold.

    Posted by Phantom_Maggot on 2008-01-12 14:51:42

I agree with what everyone else is saying. This album is not as easily accessable as Total, baring a few songs like Down in the Basement. However, once you give the album a few spins, it becomes apparent that the song writing is much better on this album. On Total, I always skipped some songs (like Rebound), but there is not one song to skip on this release. I cannot wait to see these guys live again.

    My Score:

First time I listened to this I didn't like it as much as "Total" but after two days of listening to nothing but I've decided that this is a better record all the way around. With "Total" there was a few tracks I'd skip nearly every time I listened to it but this one I can listen to front to back with no problems.

One of the best bands of this decade for sure and I already can't wait for their next record.

The only thing is that Project 27 and The Falcon will be releasing records in 08 too so I'm not annointing it just yet. Plus the new Loved Ones about to come out..

And to blue bullets, I don't think this is better than Witchs With Dicks from last year

    Still awesome though

Grabbed this off emusic on Jan 1st, so I can also say it's my fave album of the New Year. "Down In The Basement" and "Gave You My Heart" can't get out of my head. Not that I'm minding it or anything ...

Fan-tas-tic album. I love it. It doesn't hit me as fast as Total did but it has had a lot longer staying power for me. I love it.
Still bummed I lost out on a copy of Another Way test pressing. Such is life. Great band.
