Formed in 1988, the band sold their initial recordings at live shows—eventually including their first full-length album 40 Oz. to Freedom. Released on the band's own Skunk Records, featured a number of defining moments for the band, including the surprise hit "Date Rape." The band also featured a selection of covers iincluding The Grateful Dead, KRS One, The Descendents, Bad Religion, Toots and the Maytals, and Bob Marley.

On May 25, 1996, just two months before Sublime, their self-titled third album and major label debut, was to be released, frontman Brad Nowell died of a heroin overdose after a show in Petaluma, California. The album went on to become a massive success, eventually selling more than five million copies. Since Nowell's death, their former labels have issued a slew of releases from a live recording, to numerous rarities and greatest hits compilation.

Most recently, two separate tribute compilations were released. The first, featuring a diverse roster of acts including Michael Franti, Avail, No Doubt and others. A second, more punk-focused tribute brought together songs from No Use for a Name, Voodoo Glow Skulls and 1208.
